Our Philosophy

What were we thinking?

At a glance, you might think the Smart Home market is mature, saturated, and owned by some of the world’s largest tech companies. What we found is that they’re only interested in selling hardware and the idea that this will be the world’s simplest Do-It-Yourself installation.

For us, that was problematic. It’s virtually impossible to build a fully decked out Smart Home with a single manufacturer’s equipment, for starters.  A Smart Home project is a project about integration. Yet no manufacturer is interested in talking about or supporting integration with another manufacturer’s products.

We saw homeowners left to see what they could cobble together with best-effort support in public forums, facing questions well beyond their technical acumen and well beyond what they ever intended to learn or know about the technology underlying the solution they were trying to build out.

And so, we set out to try to make it better.

Internet-Free Solution

We don’t like the idea of leaving control of our homes open to the cloud. It shouldn’t be up to some tech company whether I can turn my lights on or off, or whether my thermostat and therefore my air conditioning is working. We shouldn’t have to go to the “cloud” to turn off a light bulb in a light we’re sitting next to. We built the ElectraPort product suite to be able to operate free of Internet connectivity, if you want it to.

Security

Homeowners shouldn’t have to become experts in network security to have a working Smart Home. We built with security first in every way, including things like guest and tenant support for your Smart Property Rental.

Smart Home Kit is a Fixture

A lot of the market is treating Smart Home equipment like plastic, throwaway appliances. We view it as a fixture instead, like a dishwasher or hot water heater. Done well, it’s purely custom built – understanding the light switches and outlets and their placement in the home, the rooms and their uses, where the video cameras and other Things are. What are the odds that if you move, you’d take that with you and any of that would be relevant? Hopefully you’d move into a new or different home that’s already equipped (and it would be a buying factor).

Ability to Support

If we’re virtually forced to install our own Smart Home solution as a Do-It-Yourself project because that’s how the industry presented it to us, at what point do we realize that we’re the only person who can support it because we’re the only person who knows how it works, and how to make it work? We don’t want our customers in the position where self-support is their only option. We document our work so it’s reproduceable and supportable.

Time to Value

Do-It-Yourself projects tend to get done when we have time to do them, and not on any specific timeframe. Some of the most impactful features don’t get working until the end of the installation. At ElectraPort, we don’t want our customers to have to wait months until they get around to doing these things themselves. Imagine the irony of deciding you want to automate your lifestyle and then learning it will take months of your own time invested to do it.

Scalability

A lot of our customers started their Smart Home journey with a single WiFi light bulb, “to see how it would work”. Some of them have more than 50 Things in their network now, and a few more than 100. As a homeowner, going from a few phones, PCs, and a TV or two on WiFi to more than 50 devices is a bigger deal than you might think. We don’t like our customers to be surprised by unplanned expenses during their projects – this is one of the big areas that causes the delays mentioned above. Not only is the ElectraPort solution designed to handle that scale, our solution and methodology helps you uncover the breadth of the project at the beginning instead of along the way.

Your Smart Home Should Serve You, Not the Other Way Around!

Seamlessly take control of your home with one network, one app, and one investment:  ElectraPort.

  • A Smart Home system is a fixture within the household, like the furnace or garage door opener
  • The home should be treated as a platform with integral components like electrical, plumbing, hvac, access control
  • The Smart Home platform should scale to the size of the property, regardless of number of buildings etc.
